| My little family of five |
I don't think this statement has ever been truer than in 2015. When I was growing up in the 1970's most families I knew included a Mum, a Dad and probably two or three kids. I don't recall any very large families, nor any divorced parents, nor any same sex parents.
How different things are nowadays,
most children would not blink an eye if introduced to a family with six
children, one parent or two mums. Things have become much more diverse and acceptable.
I was chatting to my friend Anya the other morning though and saying I don’t
really know many single parents locally. I’m not sure why this is as I’m not
avoiding anyone but I just put it down to meeting most people at the kid’s school,
which is in the middle of nowhere or at church, where marriage is still the
norm.
I started to think about my
longest term and closest friends and most of those are married with children, a
couple are single, one is on her second marriage, another is going through
marriage breakdown right now sadly and a couple are single parents. So there is
variety there in those I choose to spend time with.
It seemed really apt when Netflix
sent me through their latest #Streamteam newsletter as the theme is families
and how we all have our own quirky one. Of course this is true and got me
thinking of some of the programs about families that I really enjoy on Netflix –
Life Unexplained
I’m not sure so many people have heard of this series but I
loved it and sadly there is only one season on Netflix at the moment as I’d
love to watch more. Basically Lux has grown up in foster care and tries to
divorce her birth parents so she can be free to do what she wants to do. Instead
she ends up with her blood Mum and Dad and a whole host of new problems. I won’t
give too much away.
Gossip Girl
I know I am going to have mentioned this series before in
one of my Netflix posts but I thought it was fabulous and when sufficient time
has passed I’ll watch all the seasons again. This may be about a group of spoilt
teenagers from many families living in New York’s Upper East Side but at the
heart of it they all take care of each other and are family.
The First Wives Club
I thought this was such a good film (to be honest I love anything
with Goldie Hawn in it) and it will have you chuckling away in many parts. Basically
when their friend commits suicide after being dumped for a younger model, three
women decided to get payback in their cheating exes.
Freaky Friday
I’ve watched this with my girls at least three or four times
now. It is one of those classic fun films and Jamie Lee Curtis is fantastic at
playing the stroppy teenager when she changes personalities with her daughter.
I see from my newsletter that there is a new Netflix
original series and it has been written by the creator of friends, that is a
pretty good pedigree isn’t it? Grace and Frankie
is a comedy starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston and
is a perfect example of how today’s families can shift, rearrange and blend in
unexpected ways. When Grace and Frankie’s husbands leave them after 20 years of
marriage—to be with each other—the women find themselves facing a change that
they never expected, but they shift their perspective to get through it
together with the support of their new blended family and, of course, a sense
of humour. I’m definitely going to give this a try as the trailer looks
good.
