Making Simple but Beautiful Christmas Tree Mini Wreaths

Tutorial for making Christmas wreath decorations that are a fantastic gift, they are simple enough for a child to make but are cheap and look really effective.

Miss E and I have been making some Christmas wreath decorations to gift to her teachers and Godparents this year. I'm really pleased with how they have come out and think they are a fab gift. The best thing is that these were made by a 10 year old and are really simple and cheap to make.

Here's what you need -
  • Curtain rings (wood ones as they ave the metal hoop at the top) We used ones compatible with a 28mm pole and picked these up in Homebase for £1.29 for 6
  • Wool in any colour you fancy, green if you want them to look like traditional wreaths (£1 in Poundland)
  • Multi-size gems - I bought 2 packs of different size ones for 99p each from Hobbycraft
  • 3mm ribbon in a colour of you choice (40p per metre)
  • Hot glue gun (or another firm glue)
  • A pair of scissors

How to make the Christmas Wreath Decorations

1.  Cut a long length of wool. Tie it on to the curtain hoop close to the metal ring. Take care to wrap the wool around the hoop, pushing it close to itself every so often and ensuring you keep a tight hold. If you run out of string, you can tie another piece on and the knot will sit at the back so it won't show, Once you have finished the full hoop tie off the string around the metal hoop and make sure it is secure.

2.  If you wish to have a second colour wool as a contrast, put that round now.

3.  Twist the metal hoop so it faces the same way as the large wool-wrapped hoop.

4.  Use the hot glue gun to stick on gems at random points around the hoop, we only stuck them on one side but you could do the whole way round if you fancy. If you are making these with a child you make want to do the hot glue gunning or at least ensure you carefully supervise the child. My daughter is very crafty and uses the hot glue gun all the time so she is familiar with how to be safe around it.

5.  Tie a piece of the ribbon around the metal hoop.

6.  Tie a longer piece of ribbon as the hanging hoop for the Christmas wreath to go on your tree. I generally used the ribbon as I think it looks nice but Miss E did a couple with wool for the hanging hoop and we also tried out cord, which worked well too.

In the end we made some green wreaths with all the same colour gems and matching (or contrasting ribbon) and a few we made with multi-colour gems and I think these were my favourite in the end. I love that white one with the yellow trim, it might be a non-traditional wreath but I think it is so cute and that one is going on my Christmas tree. Miss E loves the ones with a contrast colour wool wrapped around them and they are ones she made for her tree.

We are intending to wrap these in tissue paper with a sticker that says 'made by us' and I hope along with a box of chocolates they were will a nice personalised gift for the girls teachers at school.

To make 12 of these wreath decorations cost us about £7.20, so that is 60p each, which I think is great value.

I hope you like our Christmas wreath decorations and make some for yourself.

Wishing you an amazing Christmas. Mich x
