Discovering the Local Area from Eurocamp Club Farret, Vias, South of France

Back in May we flew into Beziers and took the short drive to the coastal town of Vias Plage, there we stayed with Eurocamp at Club Farret campsite. We had a wonderful time and you can read all about the parc in my review blog post and if you're an artist or crafter then check out my post about their outstanding (and free) art facilities too.

As we flew to the South of France we didn't have a car but if we were to visit again we would definitely hire one while we were there and not bother paying for hefty airport transfer charges. There is so much you can access easily and cheaply with a car but without it was much more difficult.

On Foot - Vias Plage
If you want to walk out from Camping Club Farret the nearest place to go (just 5 minutes away) is the resort of Vias Plage. This is very much a seaside town and has a 'strip' with plenty of restaurants, bars takeaways, tourist shops, convenience stores and great gelato shops. We popped into town every day to buy fresh pastries, have some dinner or get ice creams to eat on the beach.

The beach itself is a lovely sandy one, with good clear waters and some very nice (if expensive) restaurants on the beach itself.

On Foot - EuroPark
About a ten-minute walk gets you to the Europark amusement park. Think of a less developed Thorpe Park and you won't be far wrong. There is a bit of everything there, massive looping roller coaster, bungee swings, water rides, classic funfair sideshows and an enormous indoor soft play. If you like theme parks then this is a real benefit to have this on your doorstep.

On Foot - Take a Cruise on the Canal du Midi
Again around ten minutes walk from the parc is the Canal du Midi. This in itself is a great pace to take a stroll along and watch all the boats sailing by but you can also go for a boat ride yourself. There is a whole range of trips from an hour to a full day and you can even learn to fish too.

On Foot/ By bike - Walk into Vias Town
It took us about 30 minutes to take a leisurely stroll into the town of Vias and thankfully you can do this along an old road that is practically disused, so it felt safe for the children to amble alongside us as we all played silly games like 'I went to the shops one day and...' Or if you don't fancy walking then why not hire some bikes from the parc reception.

In truth, there isn't that much there but I loved looking around the Saint-Jean Baptiste Church and the kids had a play in the local park and we all enjoyed a coffee and crepe in the town square. Basically, it was a pleasant few hours together.

By Car - Drive to Agde
Around 5km away by car, this historic town has amazing rich architecture and is a delight to stroll around. Castle ramparts, tiny streets, interesting murals and volcanic rock buildings make Agde a little different. It is the second oldest town in France and remains very French and untouched. Head there for a trip if you want to see the real France.

By Car - Aquapark, Cap D'Agde
Just take a look at this video. How much fun does this inflatable water park look? You can book for a one hour or half-day slot and it seems that the 12-1pm slot is a good bet if you don't want it too crowded. It is 10 Euros for an hour and you'll probably find yourself exhausted by the end of that time! lol

By Car/ By Train - Beziers
Around 18km away is the town of Beziers where you'll find a massive shopping centre and all the modern amenities that you want as well as a relatively unspoiled old town with great architecture, an amazing cathedral and lots of classically French bistros.

If you wish to visit by train, you'll need to walk into Vias town first and catch the train from there. Train fares were very cheap but there was an ongoing national strike when we were there and there were two days a week without trains (sadly the days we wanted to visit!)

If you do have a car then you might fancy a visit to the Beziers Adventure, which is a fabulous high ropes course. Apparently, the SatNav finds it quite easily.

By Car - Sete and the Bassin du Thau
You can travel down to the fishing port of Sete and the bassin by car or join the trip organised by the parc. The town of Sete is again very traditional and is just gorgeous and very interesting to take a walk around and of course, you'll get the freshest seafood there. Then Bassin du Thau is a large saltwater lagoon and is very beautiful and worth taking a boat ride on.

Have you explored this area of France at all? If you have and you have a good recommendation of where to visit, please do leave it in the comments. Thanks, Mich x
