A Perfect French Holiday for Crafters and Artists

If like me, you're an amateur crafter who enjoys a bit of me-time with paints or pottery then I’ve discovered the perfect break for you. Nestled in the beautiful French countryside by the picturesque beaches of Vias Plage is Camping Club Farret that we recently stayed at with Eurocamp.

We took this family break with the intention of enjoying all the regular fun of a Eurocamp parc - amazing pools, kids clubs, fun evening entertainment, play parks and a beautiful holiday parc to rest at. I had no idea when we booked that there would be the most amazing opportunities to get creative!

The Atelier Creatif run by a lovely German woman called Sabine is fantastic. For six days a week (it’s closed on Sundays) who can go along from 9-11am and 3-5pm and get involved with whatever takes your fancy.

If you want to make something from pottery then you are best to do that early on in the holiday so there is enough time for it to dry and you can then paint it and Sabine will fire it in the kiln for you so you take some something magnificent to remind you of your holiday. Both of my girls tie-dyed a silk scarf, Miss E and I made a mosaic from broken tiles and Miss M made a plaque for her door.

There really is a bit of everything in this treasure trove of creativity and so you know the best bit? It’s all absolutely free, you can use as much as you like as long as it is turned into a craft project and not just wasted. All Sabine asks is that you look after your children (it’s not a creche facility) and clear up after yourself. Brushes should be washed, pots rinsed and used newspaper binned and replaced. Just the same as you would do at home.

I’ll give you a heads up though, if you’re the kind of person who likes to work in a pristine room then this facility probably won’t suit you as it is dusty, a bit messy and generally full of all sorts but it is so much fun. Sabine is really knowledgeable and it is interesting helping her with her English where she is missing a word, such as ‘bounce’ or ‘hammer’. Many of the other users were also German and even though we didn’t share a language we certainly shared smiles and encouragement of each other’s work and many had great English and helped Sabine ensure we knew what she meant when she was instructing us.

You can be totally self-sufficient if you like, as Sabine seems to encourage people to be adventurous and try new things but she also has great creative skills herself and was able to show us how to mosaic with tiles, adhesive and grout and also instruct my girls in silk tie-dying.

When I asked the girls about their favourite part of the holiday Miss E said it was the crafting. The Atelier Creatif was something so different from anywhere else we had experienced before and she was in her element. Some days there were a dozen kids and on others, it was just her amongst a group of adults who were creating some seriously wonderful art. I think the pictures speak for themselves....

If you are looking for a break in France where you can let your creative juices flow freely then I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend you take a look at Eurocamp at Camping Club Farret on Vias Plage, Languedoc region. 

The prices if you can go out of school term are so reasonable and of course, the weather is far better in the South of France than it is at home! This would make an excellent base for a girls three or four-night break - fabulous pools, getting creative, good food and great wine. You couldn’t ask for more!
