COVID Cleaning Tips for a Stress-free Home

{This is a collaborative post}

As COVID-19 surges in the UK again, families are scrambling to keep their homes clean. But it’s important to remember that we don’t just clean our homes for our own sakes or for fear of infection. We also clean our homes to create a safe haven for the ones we love.

Home should be a place where we can feel comfortable and relax. It should be a place where we can leave our stresses at the door and enjoy peace, love, and togetherness. Nothing’s worse than coming home to stress and anxiety and that’s why it’s so important to make sure we disinfect and clean properly during the pandemic. Not just for our physical health, but for our mental health too.

We’ve rounded up some fantastic cleaning tips to make your home feel cleaner and your mood lighter.

Disinfect with UV Light

Walking into a home that smells like a hospital isn’t very reassuring or relaxing. But that’s some homes smell like due to the constant chemical spraying and bleaching. To ditch the fumes and odours (and the scrubbing too!), you can disinfect just as effectively with a UV light wand.

UV light is proven to kill coronaviruses like COVID-19, and it’s so effective that it’s been used by the NHS in hospitals for years. However, it’s never been practical or affordable to use in the home until now.

Now, you can get a handheld UV light wand that kills 99.99% of bacteria, viruses, mould, fungus, and more in seconds. It’s 100% natural, so it leaves no stinky odours or toxic residues behind and, for parents, it requires no scrubbing at all! Just pass the UV-C light wand over objects in your home as if you were shining a torch on them. That’s all it takes!

Our favourite UV-C wand is called Allume, and it’s made by Violet Healthcare. This wand is powerful and effective, but it also has the necessary safety features to prevent UV light from shining on your skin or eyes.

We love that it cleans so much more than chemicals and liquids can. Allume can shine its UV light on just about anything. It can quickly disinfect:

        Clothes and masks

        Household objects

        Mail and parcels

        Phones and computers

        Fresh produce

        Toys and baby products

        Car interiors

        Hygiene products

        Countertops and surfaces

        So much more

Allume even folds up and fits in a bag, so you can take it with you to clean seats on the bus or train, public toilets, and lift buttons. It's so easy to use and so effective that it makes the whole house feel safer. And you never have to deal with toxic chemicals or strong fumes again.

Create a Quarantine Drop Zone

The stress piles up when there’s a lot of coming and going to and from your house. The hustle and bustle not only creates a stressful atmosphere, but it also brings in potentially infected objects from outdoors.

You might not be able to change your busy schedules, but you can limit the items that come and go from your home with a quarantine drop zone. It might sound like something from a military field hospital, but it’s actually quite simple! All you have to do is designate a spot by the door (maybe a box), where things from outside must be put upon entering the house. That could include parcels, a football, a new toy, your newspaper, or some shopping.

Once the items are in the drop zone, just wait the recommended amount of time until the virus can no longer survive on the surface. For clothing, it’s about 2 days. For plastic, it’s up to a week, However, if you don’t feel like waiting, just disinfect the objects you want to use. This is where having an Allume UV-C light wand comes in very handy. At the end of each day, you can shine it on the items in your quarantine zone and know they are all disinfected. No need to wait for days!

The fewer foreign objects that pass through your door unquarantined, the better you’ll feel at home.

Leave Wipes around the House

Wipes are the key to a COVID-free home! They disinfect little bits here and there with ease, so always leave them around the house. They can also help the more cautious person to feel more relaxed. If someone is feeling anxious or realizes they touched something questionable, there will always be a wipe nearby to disinfect their hands and destress their mind.

Leaving wipes around shows that you care, and your family will notice these changes and feel loved and at ease. You can also encourage your family to keep wipes in their pockets at all times for disinfecting handrails, door handles, bus seats, and anything else they need to touch when they’re out and about.

Kick off your Shoes

Taking off your shoes when you come home is common for some families but not so much for others. During the age of COVID, it's something we should all practice. Many people often think about the cleanliness of their hands but they forget what can get dragged in on their feet. Your shoes touch all sorts of surfaces during the day, and the virus can easily latch on and be trailed through the house. Then, if you have young kids, it’s only a matter of time before the virus ends up on their fingers and up their noses.

Keeping your floors mopped and sterile is one way to go about it. But taking your shoes off when you get home is a lot easier. If you have a garage, put a shoe rack inside and “train” your family to take off their shoes before they come in (this is also a great spot for your quarantine drop zone!).

Taking off your shoes can also make you feel more relaxed and ready to unwind. Who likes wearing shoes at the end of the day, anyway?

Making your Home a Healthy Haven

But we can’t let our cleaning anxieties turn our homes into cold hospital wards! With the tips on this list, you can keep your home COVID-free without losing the warm and loving place you’ve made for your family.
