Whether you need to set up a proper home office for yourself or your child, personalising the space is essential for your productivity and wellbeing. We can spend a major part of our life working at a desk, as a professional employee, a freelancer, or a student. Therefore, it is crucial to get the desk space right and make it a comfortable and unique environment.
It goes without saying that every workstation requires proper equipment as a priority, and this means that you should focus on securing the right laptop and other devices in the first instance. Ultimately, you will need to decide what your workstation should include if you want to make it an efficient space and inject some personality into it!
The typical home office equipment for students and professionals could include:
A computer or laptop
A headset
A webcam (often already integrated into the computer)
A microphone
A printer/scanner
A bookshelf with the relevant literature
Stationery
Once you've gathered everything you need to work, it's time to create an environment that inspires and motivates. It's time to get creative!
A handmade leather gift
Leather adds a unique sense of luxury and elegance. There are many unique gift ideas for students, which you can learn to make yourself. A DIY bookmark can be a superb addition to the student kit, reminding them to enjoy reading and acquiring knowledge.
You can also create a full leather set for the desk. Home office workers, especially, put their desks through a lot. As they spend a lot of time sitting at the desk, the surface can rapidly show signs of wear and tear where they put the mandatory teacup! A leather coaster can help protect the desk and make the whole setting feel more put together. Also, why not pair it with a leather mouse pad for a touch of elegance that keeps them motivated during the day!
An inspiring wall
When you spend several hours staring at a blank wall, things can begin to feel dull. Colours play a crucial role in our mood and motivation. Therefore, your home office decor should reflect your personality and style of working through the colour palette.
White walls may appear clean and fresh at first. But they can drain your creativity over time. Instead, you can consider painting the office to encourage optimum brain power. For instance, a combination and grey and soothing pastel can be calming and help the mind focus. Pink tones are more likely to encourage creativity and a mural might give you an interesting focal point.
You can also create an accent wall facing the desk. Geometric patterns are useful as they enable you to create the perfect colour combination to support desk work. Someone who needs to focus for long periods of time on complex data, such as a math student, would benefit from blue tones, grey, and some yellow. On the other hand, a creative mind will feel recharged from clashing bright hues paired with some tranquil neutrals, such as vibrant pink with a muted rose powder or a light cream.

A thinking companion
What kind of thinker and processor are you? Some people are scribblers, others prefer to draw mind maps. Some are logical and organised, or perhaps you are buoyant with creativity. It doesn't matter how you approach a complex problem. What matters is how you keep track of your thoughts and tasks. Whether you are a to-do list thinker or a loose post-it notes enthusiast, you need a platform where you can safely collect your thoughts.
Making a corkboard feature can be a nice addition to your home office. Corkboards come in a variety of shapes and designs, or you can even cut your own to fit a specific space. You can frame a small A4 board on the wall or transform a side wall into a full-size board to pin your thoughts and notes upon. Whatever suits you best!
Alternatively, if you don't like the idea of sacrificing your decor for a corkboard wall, you can consider magnetic paint. Magnetic paint can be applied underneath your colour coat. It's worth noting that magnetic paint will require two to three coats to hold magnets well and if you are going to cover it with a light shade, you may want to use a primer first, as magnetic paint appears black when it dries. Once ready, you can hang your schedule or works in progress using magnets on the wall, for a truly personalised look.
You can also purchase chalk paint to transform your wall, or space into a giant blackboard. However, it can get messy in a home office as chalk dust can collect, as well as potentially clog electronic devices.
Adding personal and practical touches to the home office can transform the workstation into a homely and inspiring place. There is so much you can do to make the office your own, including simple touches such as adding family photos and potted plants. However, crafting something for the home office gives it a unique personality and may just mean that you'll work more happily in the space.
